Cheresek wins Marathon of Monaco

The Kenyan Wilfried Cheresek romped to victory in the 10th Marathon of Monaco and the Rivieras, beating the Russian Andrei Brygalov by a mere 29 seconds. Third, fourth and fifth places were all taken by Kenyans – Jacob Kitur, Simon Ripis and W Mnangat Pius. One of the favourites to win, another Kenyan Mark Kibet, retired hurt. Cheresek arrived at the Finish Line in the Louis Stadium II after 2 hours 17 minutes and 21 seconds, leading a field of more than 1,600 runners who set off at 9.30am on a mild morning yesterday. The 10km run started at 10.15am which meant that over 3,200 runners from a record 48 nationalities were pounding the streets of Monaco, and every one a winner. The route takes the marathon competitors along the coast to Cap Martin, Menton and Italy, and back via Roquebrune - that’s three countries in one run along one of the most beautiful coastlines on the Mediterranean.
