Municipal elections in the Principality on Sunday 4th March

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Monaco Mayor Georges Marsan and his 14-strong list of assistants and advisors made it safely through in municipal elections held yesterday in the Principality. But while the result was never in doubt – there were 16 up for election, only one of whom was independent of Marsan’s list – there was concern that not enough people would turn out to vote.

In the event, a gorgeous spring day and sense of duty brought 53.7 per cent of the 6,000-plus Monégasque nationals registered to vote to the Salle Canton in Fontvieille. Each candidate achieved around 2,600 votes while the independent, Bernard Carpinelli, garnered a modest 367. Given that he did not have a programme and was there “to give people a choice”, it was perhaps not surprising. Administratively, Monaco is run by this single elected assembly under the supervision of the Government. The council and its mayor are elected for a term of four years. They deliberate on all municipal business and vote on its budget. All projects concerning public works, urban development, State or private construction, public parks and spaces and traffic are put before this Council. The population of Monaco was around 32,000 in the last census in 2000. It is estimated to nearer 34,000.
