Opening of the Handiplage beach site

Since the summer of 2000, the Handiplage beach site, created and managed by the Service Soroptimist Club, has enabled handicapped people and those of reduced mobility to enjoy the pleasures of swimming free of charge. This site, open to all residents and tourists aged from 10 to 90, is set up every year on the Lavrotto public beach. It is used by individuals and members of associations alike.

250 swimming events were staged during the summer of 2005, which goes to show the need for this type of site. As of this year and at the request of the Service Soroptimist Club that is still one of the partners of the operation providing logistic support, the Handiplage beach site will be managed by the public sector.

This change comes in response to the growing use of the site and is part of the policy developed by the Monaco Government to aid the handicapped, under the auspices of the Department of Health and Social Affairs. Mr Jérôme Galtier, the Representative in charge of the handicapped people’s portfolio, will oversee management of the site. The qualified person responsible for organising events held at Handiplage will be assisted by three holiday activity leaders.

Both regulars and new users will be welcomed daily from 1st July to 17th September. With regards to parking, disabled spaces are available in the public car park of Lavrotto. The route to the lower promenade of Lavrotto from these spaces has been adapted, giving easier access. To reach the Handiplage site, visitors will be able to use an inclined plain equipped with three slopes, facilitating the way for wheelchair-bound people, notably those in electric wheelchairs. Finally, we remind all users that like last year, the Service Soroptimist Club will be providing them with free parking for 3 hours.
